A recent study conducted at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina explored the perceptions of medication disposal options among individuals who have been prescribed opioid analgesics. The study found that medication disposal programs have not been widely adopted as a solution to the opioid crisis. Barriers to disposal included failed attempts, lack of education on proper disposal, and concerns about existing options. Facilitators of disposal included low-cost options, ease of accessibility, and preferred methods. The researchers recommend clear and consistent guidance from healthcare providers on disposal and opportunities for no-cost disposal. [Extracted from the article] |
