A systematic review and meta-analysis of 20 studies and 894,527 pregnancies was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the National Institution for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) risk-stratification algorithm in predicting pre-eclampsia. The algorithm categorizes women as either high-risk or low-risk for developing pre-eclampsia and recommends aspirin prophylaxis for high-risk individuals. The analysis found that the algorithm had a sensitivity of 43.3% and a specificity of 91.0% in predicting pre-eclampsia overall. However, there was high heterogeneity in these values, indicating a low degree of certainty. The study suggests that the algorithm's false positive rate of 9.0% may lead to unnecessary prescribing and that alternate algorithms should be considered. [Extracted from the article] |
