Abstrakt: There is no history without theory. But what is the place of a theory of history and other theories in history study programs? Despite the great influence that theory (of history) has on historical thinking and work, it often plays a subordinate role in the study of history itself. There is no consensus onwhat exactlytheoryis, nor onthe consequences of different understandings oftheoryfor universityteaching. Its valuefor historical professionsis aslittle discussed asthe question ofwhether and how the theory of history can be made explicit and accessible to the wider public in schools, museums, and other history-related settings. Understanding historiographical work as a theoretically reflected practice, the article argues for the teaching of theoretical literacy in the study of history in order to learn critical, reflective thinking and multiperspectivity. Finally, the article suggests ways in which »theory as practice« can be integrated into university teaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
