Abstrakt: This article explores the impact of financial factors outside of a defined contribution (DC) plan on retirement readiness for public-sector participants. The study reveals that a significant number of households experience monthly unfunded spending spikes, which can lead to increased credit card debt and the likelihood of taking a plan loan. The research emphasizes the importance of emergency savings in preventing a cycle of increasing debt that can negatively affect retirement readiness. It also highlights the role of overall financial wellness programs, such as budget webinars and emergency savings, in improving retirement planning.
