A recent study conducted by researchers at Warsaw University of Life Sciences focused on the ectromelia virus, which causes mousepox and serves as a model for studying poxvirus pathogenesis. The study investigated the role of mitochondria in the immune response during ECTV infection. The findings revealed that modifications to the mitochondrial network morphology can alter the immune response in infected mouse fibroblasts. This research is important for understanding the relationship between poxviruses and their hosts, particularly in the absence of a global recommendation for smallpox vaccination.
