Researchers at University Hospital La Paz in Madrid, Spain, have conducted a study on two outbreaks of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections in an intensive care unit (ICU). The study aimed to describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of the outbreaks, as well as the mechanisms of resistance and treatment options. The researchers found that the outbreaks were caused by different strains of A. baumannii, with one strain being the cause of the major outbreak. They also identified cefiderocol-resistant strains and concluded that retesting using broth microdilution is necessary for definitive categorization. The study provides valuable insights into the challenges of treating CRAB infections and the emergence of cefiderocol-resistant mutants. [Extracted from the article] |
