Abstrakt: The performance of an existing full-scale anaerobic digestion facility was improved by switching from mono-digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste to co-digestion with fruit-vegetable waste and horse manure without further excessive investments. The methane yield was increased to 172 mL/gVS under a substrate to inoculum ratio (S:I) equal to 1.3 and an organic loading rate (OLR) equal to 0.88kgVS/m^3/d known as the control scenario. Finding the optimal configuration between the co-substrates and recirculated digestate was the core question of the current research. The Taguchi method was employed for experimental design in pilot scale through which the OLR, the mixing ratios, and the (S:I) were considered independent variables. The monetary revenue per unit volume of digester per day was finally selected as the criterion named net daily energy benefit (NDEB) to determine the optimal experimental run. Three different scenarios were assumed for the calculation of NDEB, and the highest one in terms of UScent/m^3/d was achieved under a (S:I) equal to 1.4, an OLR of 2.3kgVS/m^3/d, and a mixing ratio equal to 22:2:1 (VS basis for organic fraction of MSW: fruit and vegetable waste: horse manure, respectively) that was more than 105% higher than the control scenario.
