Abstrakt: This article discusses the use of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). While TH has been used for centuries and is thought to modulate key mechanisms involved in secondary brain injury, recent clinical studies have shown mixed results. Some studies have shown associations between TH and improved outcomes, while others have not. Meta-analyses have also produced conflicting results. The authors of this article conducted a large meta-analysis and found that TH was associated with a reduction in mortality and poor neurologic outcomes, but also an increased risk of complications. However, the results were limited by methodological concerns and heterogeneity in the data. The authors suggest that further research is needed to refine cooling methods, identify subpopulations that may benefit from TH, and explore the use of TH in combination with other neuroprotective strategies.
