Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, has gained popularity for his tough stance on gangs, resulting in a decrease in homicides and a safer environment. However, his methods have raised concerns about constitutional and legal constraints, as he rules under emergency powers that suspend civil liberties and has targeted opposition and critics. Human rights groups have accused his government of abuses. Bukele's adoption of Bitcoin as a PR move brought investments and tourism to the country, but did not lead to widespread use of the cryptocurrency. While his aggressive measures have reduced violence, they have also raised concerns about human rights. The long-term success of Bukele's policies remains uncertain and may not address the underlying causes of violence. [Extracted from the article] |
