Experts from the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are working on a policy to address the issue of salt reduction in India while ensuring adequate iodine nutrition. The policy aims to reduce salt intake to prevent cardiovascular diseases and align with universal salt iodization goals. The World Health Organization recommends a daily salt consumption of less than 5g, but recent data shows that salt intake in India is almost double the recommended amount. The meeting discussed the importance of coordinated policy development and effective implementation, as well as the need for more data on sodium and iodine intake. [Extracted from the article] |
