This article discusses the use of appreciative education (AE) in the emergency department (ED) to improve teaching interactions. Traditionally, bedside teaching in the ED focuses on identifying weaknesses and problem-solving, which can negatively frame the learning process. AE, on the other hand, focuses on strengths and potential to achieve co-created goals. The article describes how a cohort of faculty at an academic EM residency program implemented AE by identifying learners' outcomes, discussing strengths, and collaboratively brainstorming ways to achieve those outcomes. The use of AE resulted in improved learner motivation and self-esteem, as well as enhanced feedback quality. However, challenges include the need for faculty to keep learners accountable and the unpredictable nature of the ED environment. The authors suggest further research on this technique.
