Abstrakt: The article discusses the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing winter road maintenance. Traditional methods of managing winter roads rely on manual decision-making, which can be labor-intensive and prone to human error. AI can enhance these processes by providing data-driven decision support, processing vast amounts of information quickly and accurately. The SmartMDSS project, led by Michigan Technological University and the University of Virginia, aims to enhance winter road maintenance using AI and deep learning technologies. Initial results have shown significant improvements in efficiency and effectiveness, leading to improved road safety and operational efficiency. The integration of AI into winter road maintenance offers benefits such as improved safety, cost reduction, environmental protection, operational efficiency, and scalability. However, there are challenges and considerations to address, including data quality and availability, technical expertise, initial costs, and user acceptance. Despite these challenges, the article concludes that AI-enhanced winter maintenance systems have the potential to transform road management strategies, leading to smarter, safer, and more sustainable winter road maintenance.
