This article examines American media portrayals of two Japanese pitchers now playing American major league baseball: Hideo Nomo and Hideki Irabu. Data gathered for this article were drawn from the sports sections of the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and Sports Illustrated. Evidence suggests that journalistic portrayals of Asian athletes have perpetuated stereotypes in regard to both Asian Americans and Asian nationals. Specifically, this article argues that portrayals of Nomo and Irabu have reified stereotypes of Asian Americans and Asian nationals as model minorities and economic threats. The author suggests that a greater cultural awareness and sensitivity be taken when writing sports articles that cover athletes from various ethnic and national backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
