Abstrakt: The motif of royal Norwegian patronage over the jarldom of Orkney should be considered in specific political, and social contexts. The motif in question, so heavily affecting the narration of Orkneyinga saga, should be interpreted as an echo of political vectors defining politics both in Orkney and Norway, especially in late 11th and 12th centuries. For jarls the Norwegian royal patronage was important in ongoing conflicts of power. For the kings of Norway, the claim of royal patronage over the jarldom was of special importance in times of both civil wars and 13th century attempts to establish authority over the whole Northern Atlantic.
