Abstrakt: Purpose: Hadrontherapy, the technique that uses charged particles, is an area in which scientific insight, technological advancement, research and collaboration are mutually beneficial and inspirational for the benefit of the patient. The oncological treatment of patients has become a multidisciplinary effort, in which the contribution of specialists from manifold backgrounds is essential, and only a transdisciplinary "fusion", an integration and overlap across relevant disciplines, can be successful. The purpose of this contribution is to describe the Centre for Oncological Hadron therapy (CNAO) main features and activities. Methods: CNAO is among the six centers worldwide and the fourth in Europe that provide protons and carbon ions for the treatment of tumors. Results: CNAO represents a centre of excellence, supported by the Italian Ministry of Health and the Lombardy Region Approximately 5000 patients have been treated successfully, several research projects are underway to enhance treatment outcomes and in the near future, new modalities will be launched. Conclusions: In this respect, CNAO is at the forefront and BNCT represents and additional viable option in the treatment of disseminated tumours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
