A recent study conducted by researchers at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, explores the various uses of dapsone in dermatology. Originally developed for textile dyeing, dapsone gained recognition in the 1930s for its antibacterial properties and has since been used to treat leprosy and dermatitis herpetiformis. Despite its FDA approval for these conditions, dapsone has been increasingly used off-label for other dermatologic conditions. The study highlights the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, indications, dosages, and safety profile of dapsone, emphasizing its versatility and cost-effectiveness in dermatology. Ongoing clinical trials are also investigating its efficacy in novel dermatologic uses. [Extracted from the article] |
