An introduction is presented to a series of studies on biocatalysis discussed within the issue, with topics including the role of the enzyme deoxypodophyllotoxin synthase (DPS) in the biosynthesis of podophyllotoxin, engineering of non-ribosomal peptides for therapeutic drug applications, and the use of protease-catalyzed peptide synthesis for the chemoenzymatic formation of glycopeptides. |
