Abstrakt: Background and Purpose Burnout rates in healthcare workers (HCWs) are reaching record levels. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been examined as an intervention for burnout, but studies often lack comparator groups and rely on self-reported data. We conducted a pilot study assessing burnout in HCWs before and after participating in either a compressed MBSR course, a non-mindfulness-based stress reduction course (N-MBSR), or no intervention. Additionally, we collected resting electroenceophalography (EEG) data to assess for correlation with mindfulness and burnout. Methods HCWs were recruited from the community and randomly assigned to one of three groups. The intervention and active control groups completed fourweek courses in MBSR and N-MBSR, respectively. Participants completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and resting EEG assessment pre- and post-intervention. Results Twenty-five participants were enrolled, 19 of whom completed the study. The three groups started the study with equivalent scores on the CBI. Mindfulness increased significantly in the intervention group (+0.43, p = 0.04). Burnout decreased only in the active control group (-9.26, p = 0.04). EEG analysis showed an increase in beta power for the intervention group (5.01, p = 0.004) associated with increased mindfulness. Conclusions Effective interventions for burnout are a crucial step in maintaining our healthcare workforce. Here, our results suggest that N-MBSR may be comparable to or more effective than MBSR in reducing burnout. We also found changes in resting EEG dynamics in our intervention group. In particular, an increase in beta power was found, correlated with increased mindfulness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
