The article presents an overview of Medicare, a U.S. federal program that pays for covered health care services of qualified beneficiaries. Information is provided on the structure of Medicare consisting of hospital insurance (HI), supplementary medical insurance (SMI), Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans, estimated Medicare spending in 2024, eligibility and enrollment, beneficiary costs, health care providers and plan payments, and financing through the HI and SMI trust funds. |
