A recent literature review conducted by researchers at Chettinad Dental College and Research Institute in Chennai, India, explores the various storage media options for avulsed teeth (teeth that have been completely knocked out). The study emphasizes the importance of choosing the right storage medium during the extra-alveolar period (the time the tooth is outside the socket) to ensure the viability of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells, which are crucial for successful reimplantation. The review identifies Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) as the gold standard storage medium, capable of preserving PDL cells for up to 48 hours. Other effective options like milk, soy milk, and oral rehydration solutions are also discussed. The study suggests that further research is needed on emerging media such as propolis and epigallocatechin-3-gallate. The researchers highlight the importance of public awareness and accessibility to effective storage media to improve the prognosis of avulsed teeth. [Extracted from the article] |
