Abstrakt: This study evaluates the impact of D-Limonene on the anaerobic digestion (AD) in terms of stability, methane yield and process kinetics, with a focus on the economic viability of a biorefinery based on D-Limonene extraction using steam explosion from orange peel waste (OPW) followed by AD. The experiments were carried out at laboratory scale using mesophilic (35 ± 1 °C) completely stirred tank reactors that operated in semicontinuous mode. As a result, reduction in methane production of 57% and a marked variation in biogas composition were observed with the addition of D-Limonene. Although the process was stable in terms of pH and alkalinity, the accumulation of nondegraded acidic organic matter was directly related to the decrease of the microbial concentration in the reactors. The process kinetics was also affected, with a reduction in the apparent kinetic constant K′ from 0.6 d−1 to 0.1 d−1. The digestion carried out on the free-D-Limonene orange peel waste (FL-OPW) (with 70% of D-Limonene removed) increased the methane coefficient by 27% with a value of 232 mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS). According to the economic evaluation, the proposed biorefinery system would be profitable for methane yield coefficient values higher than 223 mL CH4/g VS. Therefore, the extraction of D-Limonene, which has a wide range of applications in different industrial sectors, might be suitable to avoid the microbial inhibition and diminish of the methane production, ensuring the profitability of the valorisation system within the frame of circular economy.
