Abstrakt: Cannabis is the most consumed illegal drug among the world's population, with an estimated 4% of the population (219 million people) using it regularly. In 2021, about 46% of countries identified cannabis as the primary drug linked to substance use disorders, with 34% reporting it as the main reason for seeking treatment. The predominant consumers are young people, who suffer the most severe Health impacts. Despite numerous studies exploring its effects on mental health, much remains unknown This study aims to update whether there is a correlation between cannabis use and mental health disorders (anxiety, depression, and suicide) among young adults. The study design is a systematic review and meta-analysis, following PRISMA standard. The data sources employed were PubMed, Mendeley, Embase, WOS, CINAHL, and Scopus. The studies included were prospective, retrospective, longitudinal, and crosssectional, published from 2013 to 2023, assessing cannabis use and mental disease development in individuals aged 15-30 years. After screening 6242 articles, 35 met the selection criteria and 20 were included for meta-analysis. The quality of bias assessment was addressed using Hoy et al. tool. Summary data extracted were ORs and 2x2 tables. Mixed effects models were fitted using REML method. The analysis showed that cannabis consumption in young adults is associated to higher risk of depression OR of 1.48 aOR 1.32 (95% CI 1.10 to 1.59), risk for suicidal ideation aOR 1.54 (95% CI 1.11 to 2.13), suicidal attempt aOR 1.80 (95% CI 1.30 to 2.49) and for anxiety OR 1.57 (95% CI 1.19 to 2.08). The current systematic review suggests that cannabis consumption at an early age is clearly associated with the development of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and attempts in young people.
