This article examines the flaws in New York's guardianship system, which is designed to protect vulnerable individuals but often fails to do so. The system is overwhelmed, resulting in a lack of oversight and neglect of those under guardianship. Poor individuals are particularly affected, as they are often placed under the care of loosely regulated nonprofits. The article provides specific examples of abuse and exploitation within the system and calls for reform and improved qualifications and oversight for guardians. Additionally, the article discusses the case of a woman named Zbiegniewicz, who suffered due to the inadequate care provided by the New York Guardianship Services (NYGS).
