A recent study conducted at the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in Jiangsu, China, explored the use of a composite scaffold called MPTI for repairing bone defects. The researchers found that the MPTI scaffold had suitable mechanical strength and superior photothermal properties, which allowed it to maintain a specific temperature and promote the release of ICT under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The scaffold was found to be biocompatible and capable of promoting cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and biomineralization in vitro, as well as repairing bone defects in vivo. The researchers concluded that the MPTI scaffold has the potential to be used in bone defect repair, with its osteogenic properties further enhanced under NIR irradiation.
