Researchers from the University Medical Centre Groningen in the Netherlands have published a report on experimental lung transplants. The report details the successful case of a 58-year-old male with a progressive fibrotic lung disease who needed a lung transplantation. The patient, who resided on a remote island with limited access to specialized medical care, was transported to the Netherlands using awake veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vv-ECMO). The lung transplant was performed without complications, demonstrating that vv-ECMO flight transport can be a safe procedure for selected lung transplant candidates. [Extracted from the article] |
