A new study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden has found that atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a faster decline in physical function in older individuals. The study followed a population-based cohort of individuals aged 60+ years over a 15-year period and measured functional mobility through walking speed. The researchers observed that individuals with AF experienced a faster annual decline in walking speed compared to those without AF. Incident heart failure and stroke were also found to accelerate the decline in walking speed in individuals with AF. The study suggests that AF has a negative impact on functional mobility in older adults. [Extracted from the article] |
