Abstrakt: This article examines the identity and legacy of the residents of Nueva Germania, a region in Paraguay that was originally intended to be a racially pure German community. The author, Jonatan Kurzwelly, explores how the current inhabitants of the area perceive their German heritage and how it intersects with their Paraguayan identity. Through personal stories and participatory photography, Kurzwelly reveals the complex and contradictory nature of national, ethnic, and personal identities. He argues against essentialist notions of identity and advocates for a non-essentialist understanding that recognizes the fluid and imaginative nature of individual identities. The text also discusses the challenges of capturing individual lives and voices in written history, particularly in the context of cultural constructs and identity politics. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the personal and intimate nature of voices and the ability to convey personality and artistry through words. The article calls for a cosmopolitan anthropology that transcends cultural classifications and seeks to distill a universal human story from individual stories, highlighting the complementarity and diversity of individual experiences and the common humanity that underlies them.
