The study was carried out from August 2022 to July 2023 using point count method. A total of 20 species of migrant shorebirds, spanning four families within the order Charadriiformes (Scolopacidae, Charadriidae, Laridae and Haematopodidae) were documented. Among the observed species, 17 are categorized as least concerned according to IUCN Red List. However, two species Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata and Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea are classified as near threatened, while Great Knot Calidris tenuirostris is endangered, according to IUCN Redlist category. The study identified sand mining as the major cause of erosion and alteration of Vellanathuruthu coastal line. The significant presence migrants and threatened species highlights the importance of the study area, emphasizing the need for future conservation efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
