A study conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University examined the association between postoperative glycemic variability (GV) and surgical outcomes in diabetic patients undergoing hip fracture fixation. The study analyzed data from 605 patients with diabetes mellitus who underwent hip fracture fixation between 2011 and 2020. The results showed that higher GV in the postoperative period was associated with increased rates of revision surgery, and there was a trend towards increased mortality, readmission rates, and surgical site infections. The study suggests that close monitoring and control of glucose levels in diabetic patients during the postoperative period is important to mitigate the negative effects of elevated GV and identify patients who require closer observation and follow-up.
