Dr. Gillispie-Bell, a board-certified OB-GYN, is working to improve women's healthcare in Louisiana, a state with high maternal mortality rates, particularly among non-Hispanic Black women. Many pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, but there is a shortage of OB-GYNs in the South, which is expected to worsen. Dr. Gillispie-Bell is also addressing fibroids and implicit bias in healthcare, advocating for telehealth and the use of midwives for low-risk patients. According to the March of Dimes, over 2.2 million women of childbearing age in Louisiana lack access to maternity care. The national maternal mortality rate in the US has more than doubled from 1999 to 2019, according to the Journal of American Medicine. [Extracted from the article] |
