According to an article in AVweb, the company LyondellBasel Industries, the only remaining candidate in the FAA's Piston Aviation Fuel Initiative (PAFI) process, claims that creating a drop-in replacement for 100LL fuel is impossible. LyondellBasel's business development manager, Dan Pourreau, stated that paper and technical modifications would be necessary for some engines to safely run on unleaded fuel. Another fuel candidate, GAMI's G100UL, has an FAA supplemental type certificate for use in spark ignition gasoline-powered engines, but the FAA has not yet released STCs for helicopter engines. Pourreau explained that achieving the required Motor Octane Number (MON) of 104 for 100LL without leaving unacceptable deposits in the engines has proven to be virtually impossible.
