Duquesne Light Company (DLC) conducted an open innovation challenge to improve underground cable monitoring and enhance worker safety. DLC sought a solution that would provide real-time data and communication about the condition of the underground network without the need for physical entry. Through a multiphase process, DLC vetted proposals, simulated use cases, piloted technology, and selected DNV's Smart Cable Guard as the winning solution. The Smart Cable Guard remotely identifies faults and partial discharges in underground cables, allowing for timely repairs and increased worker safety. DLC plans to integrate the technology into its underground network and scale up installations in high-load areas.
