A study conducted at the University of Jos in Nigeria aimed to determine the factors contributing to prolonged hospital stays among surgical patients. The research found that the mean duration of stay after discharge was 17.6 days, with financial reasons and absence of a caregiver being the main causes. Patients suggested bill waivers for indigent patients, reduced healthcare costs, and financial aid from philanthropists as ways to reduce prolonged hospital stays. The study highlights the need for a multi-sectoral approach to improve enrollment in the National Health Insurance Scheme and provide social support for patients post-discharge.
