A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh provides new insights into bone research, specifically focusing on thalattosuchian crocodylomorphs from the Sinemurian period. Thalattosuchian crocodylomorphs were prevalent in shallow marine ecosystems during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, but their origins remain unknown. The study describes three specimens from the UK, including a partial cranial rostrum, cervical vertebrae, and dorsal vertebrae, which are among the oldest known thalattosuchian fossils. The findings shed light on the evolution of thalattosuchian internal rostrum and cranial bone microstructure. Further research is needed to determine the timing of the shift to an aquatic lifestyle.
