A recent study conducted at Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital-IRCCS in Rome, Italy, has found that a ketogenic diet may have significant benefits for individuals with nephropathic cystinosis, a rare inherited lysosomal storage disorder. The study showed that when animal models of the disease were fed a ketogenic diet, there was a nearly complete prevention of Fanconi syndrome, a common complication of the disorder. Additionally, the diet appeared to mitigate kidney damage and improve tubular function. These findings suggest that a ketogenic diet may be a potential therapeutic option for individuals with nephropathic cystinosis. [Extracted from the article] |
