This article discusses the challenges faced by labor market and industrial relations scholars, focusing on the decline of unionization in affluent economies and the difficulties in labor organizing. It also explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labor market, including changes in labor demand and supply, labor force shortages, and a resurgence of unionization and collective organizing among workers. The article emphasizes the importance of analyzing power dynamics and incorporating race and ethnicity into industrial relations theory. It also examines the experiences of Black and immigrant workers in Amazon warehouses in the US South, highlighting the role of racial differences in shaping their working conditions and unionization efforts.
