Abstrakt: This letter from the Canadian Medical Association Journal discusses a case of acute liver failure in an 18-year-old patient who had taken acetaminophen while also being infected with hepatitis A virus (HAV) and norovirus. The authors suggest that the acetaminophen may have acted synergistically with the viral infection to induce liver failure, even though the patient did not exceed the recommended dose. Other studies have also found that acetaminophen can enhance the hepatotoxicity of acute viral infections. The authors argue that while acetaminophen is widely used and liver failure is rare, it should be avoided whenever possible in cases of acute HAV infection. [Extracted from the article]
