Abstrakt: A study conducted by Baylor College of Medicine examined the predictors of residual neoplasia (abnormal growth of cells) in patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastrointestinal lesions. The researchers found that most lesions (87.5%) did not have residual disease on follow-up. They identified esophageal carcinoma, severe submucosal fibrosis, and positive histological margins as significant predictors of residual neoplasia. The study suggests that patients without these risk factors may benefit from close endoscopic surveillance rather than surgical resection. [Extracted from the article]
