A recent report from Wroclaw, Poland discusses a study on gene therapy for critical limb ischemia in thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO). The researchers administered plasmids of the vascular endothelial growth factor gene (VEGF 165) with or without bone marrow-derived stem cells to 21 patients. The study found that gene therapy using the VEGF plasmid, with or without stem cells, administered intramuscularly into an ischemic limb in TAO, is a safe and effective therapy. The research provides valuable insights into the potential of gene therapy for treating vascular diseases. [Extracted from the article] |
