A recent study conducted by the Ataturk University Faculty of Medicine in Erzurum, Turkey compared the clinical characteristics and course predictors of childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) and early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). The study found that there were significant differences between the two groups in terms of symptom distribution, disease severity, and treatment approaches. The COS group had a higher prevalence of comorbidities and required greater use of multiple antipsychotic medications. The study also identified predictive factors for the disease course, including initial disease severity and socioeconomic level. The researchers concluded that early diagnosis and treatment are important for improving prognosis in schizophrenia, and that preventive programs and pharmacological methods should be developed for children with neurodevelopmental problems, particularly those from low socioeconomic status families.
