A recent study conducted by Washington State University explored the feasibility and acceptability of virtual Harm Reduction Talking Circles (HaRTC) as an intervention for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The study involved 51 participants from various tribal affiliations and states, who attended virtual HaRTC sessions over an 8-week period. The results indicated that the virtual HaRTC was highly acceptable, effective, culturally aligned, and helpful according to participant ratings. Participants also showed significant decreases in alcohol use and alcohol-related harm, as well as improvements in spirituality and health-related quality of life. The study suggests that virtual HaRTC shows promise as a culturally aligned intervention for AI/AN individuals with AUD, but further randomized controlled trials are needed to determine its efficacy.
