A recent report from the Douglas Mental Health University Institute discusses research on the VGLUT3-pT8I mutation and its effects on striatal dopamine signaling and maladaptive consumption in male mice. The study found that mice with the mutation exhibited reduced dopamine release in the dorsomedial striatum, leading to habit formation and increased maladaptive use of drugs or food. However, increasing acetylcholine tone with donepezil reversed the self-starvation phenotype observed in the mutant mice. The researchers suggest that unbalanced dopaminergic transmission in the dorsal striatum may be a common mechanism between substance use disorders and eating disorders. [Extracted from the article] |
