Abstrakt: In Indonesia, there are still many metal smelting processes using cupola stoves and induction stoves as well as metal casting using sand casting such as in Ceper, Klaten, Central Java. An analysis of the metal casting plant waste steel slag will be analyzed from a factory that uses induction furnaces and cupola. The major compound in steel slag from induction furnace contains cristobalite and silicon oxide (SiO2) as a major component. EDS spectra of steel slag from induction furnace showed that the major atoms in the slag are carbon and silica with equal ratio. The major compound in steel slag from induction furnace contains silicon oxide (SiO2), quartz (SiO2) and calcium silicate (CaSiO3) as a major component. EDS spectra of steel slag from cupola furnace showed that the major atoms in the slag are silica and carbon with ratio of 2:1. Due to its major compound and surface images, the steel slag from both cupola and induction furnace can be used for some purposes. This material, which is still classified as a solid waste, can be used as aggregate in road superstructures, coarse and fine aggregate in concrete, ballast in railways, agricultural soil fertilizer and high temperature thermal energy storage in solar tower plants.
