Cinnamic acid naturally obtained from Alpinia galangal is a source of antioxidants and antiaging for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Therefore, this study aims to examine the fractionation of cinnamic acid from Indonesian crude Alpinia galangal oil as well as to determine its antioxidant, antiaging, and potential irritation of the skin. Cinnamic acid was fractionated and then separated from other components in Crude Alpinia galangal oil. The antioxidant activity test was carried out using the DPPH method, the antiaging test used the S.pombe spot method, and the potential irritation test was performed with the semi-occlusive single patch method and clinical evaluation. The results showed that cinnamic acid could be produced by fractionation at a temperature above 265 °C. The antioxidant activity or IC50 of Alpinia galangal oil was 20.4 mg/ml, while fraction-4 with 100% cinnamic acid component amounted to 18.9 mg/ml. Furthermore, the antiaging activity indicated by the yeast viability was 80 g/ml for the crude sample and 40 g/ml for fraction-4. The irritation potential of fraction-4 determined by the mean irritation index (MII) ranged from 0.09 – 2.00, which is categorized as slightly irritant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
