Abstrakt: The article discusses the transition from the term nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The new nomenclature emphasizes the role of metabolic disturbances and the need for a positive diagnosis based on specific criteria. The change in terminology has several benefits, including a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment, increased awareness of the disease, and the preservation of existing data. However, there are challenges and limitations, such as the classification of patients without evident metabolic risk factors and the unfamiliarity of the term "steatotic" to patients. Overall, the adoption of the MASLD definition is seen as a step in the right direction for improved risk assessment and personalized treatment. [Extracted from the article]
