The historiography on Catholics and political parties -- specifically Ppi and Dc -- enjoyed great fortune as long as the Dc existed. After its end, a suppression of this object of study prevailed, although a small group of scholars gave rise to a signifi cant historiographical strand. However, the "party of the Catholics" played a crucial role in the profound transformation of the relationship between the Church and the Italian society, and the role played by the Christian Democrats as a governing party was crucial for the affi rmation and development of Italian democracy.
