This article discusses the importance of accurately identifying vessel wall invasion in malignant retroperitoneal tumors before surgery. The current diagnostic methods, such as contrast-enhanced computed tomography and MRI, have limitations in depicting the spatial association between the vessel wall and tumor tissue. Surgical and pathological confirmation is often necessary, which can increase the risk of complications. The article highlights the potential of non-contrast-enhanced vessel wall MRI sequences in evaluating vascular invasion, as they provide high-resolution imaging with reduced artifacts. A recent study demonstrated the effectiveness of vessel wall MRI in classifying vessel wall invasion, showing promise for preoperative preparation and prognosis. However, further research is needed to explore specific vessel involvement and the value of contrast-enhanced vessel wall MRI. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of vessel wall MRI's application in retroperitoneal tumors and suggests the need for larger studies to improve surgical planning and outcomes.
