A recent study conducted by researchers at Laval University in Quebec, Canada, explored the relationship between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), mentalizing, and trauma-related symptoms in adolescent psychiatric inpatients. The study found that CSA and mentalizing were independently associated with a latent factor consisting of posttraumatic stress, borderline personality features, and sexual concerns. Mentalizing, which involves understanding one's own and others' psychological reactions, was found to have a stronger direct effect and explained more variance in trauma-related symptoms. The findings suggest that interventions focused on promoting mentalizing, such as Mentalization Based Treatment, may help alleviate mental health difficulties in adolescent psychiatric inpatients, including those associated with CSA.
