A recent study conducted at Cairo University investigated the ocular findings and associated risk factors in long-term survivors after allogenic-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in Saudi Arabia. The study included 72 patients who underwent HSCT from 1996 to 2016. The researchers found that ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was detected in 20.56% of patients, with varying degrees of severity. The study highlights the importance of evaluating baseline parameters for the pre-HSCT diagnosis of dry eye disease and suggests that patients be referred to a cornea specialist before undergoing HSCT.
