Abstrakt: New research from the University of Kansas Medical Center explores the use of hearing tests to assess otitis media with effusion (OME) in children with Down syndrome. OME is a childhood condition characterized by fluid accumulation in the middle ear, which can lead to hearing loss. The study found that while most diagnoses of OME occurred in otolaryngology clinics, a higher proportion of hearing testing at the time of diagnosis occurred in Down syndrome clinics. The research highlights the importance of early diagnosis of hearing loss in children with Down syndrome and timely referrals to otolaryngology clinics for management of OME.
